Ein kleines kostenloses Tool mischt den DVD-Kopier-Markt kräftig auf. Es ist besser als MPEG2, bietet mehr Funktionen als DivX und kopiert als praktisches Nebenprodukt DVDs auch 1:1.

A small free tool is speeding up the DVD-R markets at the moment. Its better than MPEG2, has more functions than DivX and can also copy DVD's 1:!.

Die Freeware aus Dänemark kopiert ungeschützte DVDs in das wesentlich kleinere ratDVD-Format. ratDVD vereint die Vorteile der DVD und der MPEG4-Codecs wie DivX. Trotz niedriger Kompressionsraten bietet es sämtliche Funktionen der Film-DVD.

This danish freeware copys anprotected DVD's into the smaller ratDVD format. ratDVD combines the advantages of DVD and of MPEG4 codecs like DivX. Even though the compression rates are lower, all functions of the DVD remain intact.

Bei gleicher Komprimierung soll es eine ähnlich hohe Qualität wie DivX oder Xvid bieten. Allerdings beherrscht ratDVD im Gegensatz zu den MPEG4-Codecs sämtliche DVD-Funktionen wie Menüs, Sprachspuren und Extras. Dabei bietet das Tool dem Anwender freie Auswahl, Extras können entfernt, komprimiert oder im Original belassen werden. Die Komprimierung überzeugt: Eine 7,6 GByte große DVD verkleinerte ratDVD auf 1,5 GByte inklusiver aller Menüs, Sprachspuren, Untertitel und "Hidden Features".

Using the same compression it has the similar high quality of DivX and XviD. But ratDVD keeps all the DVD functions such as menus, language files and extra stuff. The tool actually allows you to choose if extras should remain or be removed, compressed or the original kept as it is. The compression rate is good: a 7,6 GB DVD is shrunk to 1,5 GB incl. all menus, language files, subtitles and hidden features.

Ein Doppelklick auf die ratDVD-Datei genügt, und der Media-Player von Microsoft oder der Zoomplayer spielen das Video ab. Trotz des ratDVD-Formats unterstützen die Player in einem ersten Test problemlos sämtliche Features wie Menüs und Untertitel. DVD-Player wie PowerDVD unterstützt das Tool dagegen nicht.

Double clicking the ratDVD file is enough and the windows media player or the Zoomplayer will open the file and play the video. Features such as menus and subtitles are all available.

Auf Wunsch stellt ratDVD auch wieder die Original-DVD her – allerdings mit leichten Einschränkungen bei der Bildqualität, wegen der verlustbehafteten Komprimierung.

You can also reconvert the ratDVD file back to the original DVD, only slight compromises regarding quality must be taken into account.

Kleiner Wermutstropfen. ratDVD benötigt enorme Systemleistung. Selbst ein Hyperthreading-PC (P4 mit 3,0 GHz) kommt ins Schwitzen und benötigt für die Konvertierung einer DVD mehr als 5 Stunden.

Slight disadvantage: ratDVD requires huge system preformance. Even a Hyperthreading PC (P4 with 3,0 Ghz.) needs 5 hours to convert a DVD into a ratDVD.

Einfach ratDVD installieren und aus dem Startmenü starten. Nun mit "Öffnen" die DVD Dateien angeben und öffen.
Install ratDVD and start the programm. Open the required dvd file.

Inhaltsauswahl/Content

Generell sollten alle Inhalte einer DVD beibehalten werden. Trotzdem bietet ratDVD die Möglichkeit einzelne Titel, Tonspuren und Untetitel zu entfernen ohne die Navigation zu beeinträchtigen. Wird ein Teil entfernt, korrigiert ratDVD die Nagivation der DVD automatisch, damit es zu keinem Abspielfehler kommt.

In general, all content of the DVD should be kept. But ratDVD allows you to choose if parts of the DVD, i.e. language files, subtitles etc. are to be removed. This does not impair the navigation, as ratDVD corrects this automatically.

Einzelne Titel und das Menü können entfernt werden, indem in der Baumansicht das entsprechende Häkchen vor dem Titel/den Menüs entfern wird. Tonspuren und Untertitel können in der Listenansicht auf der rechten Seite durch das Anklicken von "Entfernen" entfernt oder im Fall von Tonspuren durch die Wahl von "Konvertieren" in AC-3 VS konvertiert werden (empfohlen).

Single titles and the menu can be removed, in order to removing the marking in friont of the title/menu. Language files and subtitles can be removed in the listed view on the right hand side by clicking "remove". You can also convert sounds into AC-3 VS (recommended).

ACHTUNG: In den Standardeinstellungen wird ratDVD LPCM und AC-3 5.1 Tonspuren in AC-3 konvertieren. Dies spart erheblich Platz und ist nahezu die selbe Qualität.

Attention: ratDVD will convert LPCM and AC-3.5.1 sound files into AC-3. This leads to size advantages and is nearly the same quality.

ACHTUNG: CSS geschützte DVDs sind nicht direkt unterstützt
Attention: CSS protected DVD's are not supported.

Umwandeln der Tonspur / Converting the sound

Das Umwandeln der Tonspur verringert die Größe einer 1GB LPCM Tonspur bzw. einer 262 MB AC-3 5.1 Tonspur zu einer nur 131MB großen AC-3 VS Tonspur.
Converting the sound files compresses a 1GB LPCM sound file or a 262 MB AC-3.5.1 sound file into a 131MB sized AC-3 VS file.

Durch dieses Verfahren wird der Ton unter minimalem, kaum merklichen Qualitätsverlust beibehalten.
This keeps the original sound with only minor quality disadvantages.

ACHTUNG: Diese Konvertiereinstellung sollte immer genutzt werden. Trotz praktisch nicht wahrnehmbaren Qualitätsunterschieds wird die Größe der Datei stark reduziert.
Attention: Thgis covertion style should always be used. It reduces the file size whilst only having a minor hardly noticable quality difference.

Tags

Mittels Tags kann Zusatzinformation über einen Film, wie zum Beispiel der Titel, das Cover, die Schauspieler, Regie, etc. in eine ratDVD Datei eingebunden werden. Das Cover des films wird dann im Windows Explorer angezeigt.

Tags allow additonal information to be displayed, e.g. Title, covers, list of stars, director etc. The covers are tehn dispalyed via the Windows Explorer.

I am sorry, but as far as I know it does not yet work with Linux systems. Lets hope there is an update soon.

I've just downloaded a couple of rat-dvd files. According to the tutorial, they should play simply by opening them with Windows media player, but in my case, there is no picture. The sound is ok, but there is no picture.

Any advice in getting these files to work would be greatly appreciated.

The correct title of this article is ratDVD. The initial letter is shown capitalized because of technical restrictions.

The ratDVD logoratDVD is a highly compressed file type, containing all the contents of a Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) movie. Files compressed by ratDVD are usually one to two gigabytes in size. It is currently available only for the Microsoft Windows Operating system.

ratDVD works by compressing a full DVD into a .ratDVD file and then playing its contents by decompressing the file and using a DirectShow-compatible DVD player.

ratDVD was only a preview version of the now commercially sold fluxDVD. While ratDVD contained the features that allowed the home user to create their own archived DVDs, this function has been removed from fluxDVD, allowing only content owners to make and sell fluxDVD archives.
