| I just bought 512MB of "byteStor" brand PC3200 memory for my PC from Amazon, but the PC locks up unless I underclock the memory to PC2700 speeds. I'm just wondering if anyone has had trouble with this brand, or whether the problem is more likely to be my ancient motherboard (Asus P4S-533). BTW I wouldn't normally buy PC stuff from Amazon, but I was spending Amazon gift vouchers, had to take the brand they stocked. |

Well, it could be a lot of things causing this problem, i've built a little over 200 pc's in my time and i've never used that particular mobo, but Asus is a top notch motherboard brand. I'd be willing to bet that the brand, (which i've never heard of), of memory you bought from Amazon is the problem. When it comes to memory (or any other pc product), you get what you pay for. Mushkin, Kingston, OCZ, Corsair, and Crucial are all reliable and perform above and beyond their ratings.
Also, it could be as simple as a raise in voltage to your RAM, increase FSB, timing settings, etc. You clocked the RAM down to pc2700, which means you know a little about voltage and timings (or you got really lucky), so i'd rule out any of those. Next time don't be such a tight ass and shell out the extra dough to get some quality RAM - even your ancient Asus P4S deserves better than what you stuck in there. |
