I don't know much on this, i haven't been paying much attention to 'next gen' format, as they usually die before they hit market...
But of the two, i think whatever winds up being cheapest, and fastest to the comsumer market will win. Seems now that may be HD-DVD, but who knows what will happen once burners and discs are mass produced and marketed... |

| Last thing I heard is that Sony is developing another format with some other big company (I forgot the name) which will be tteh next standard, so blue ray and HD DVD will both be gone... if not I think it will be Blue Ray. |

| oh my god! How is that even possible! I always thought that motherboards can't support more than 4 hard-drives. |

| Sure motherboards can't, but you can run them off PCI to IDE cards... |

| still staying on topic somewhat. Say you've been backing up onto dvdr. you get about 4 gigs per disk (2 cd rip about 1.3 gig/movie and 3 movies per disk) and each disk is costing you 50 cents (retail). That's 13 cents/gig. OTOH, 250 gig HD go for $100 or 40 cents/gig. The reason this came up, burn for cheap storage or buy HDs for instant porn access? Right now I got 1.8T in drives accross 2 computers and been to lazy to burn to disk. Should I buy another drive or get off my lazy ass and burn? |

The "other" big company you are thinking of is Toshiba, who is the developer of HD-DVD, (NEC also had hands on with HD-DVD). Both companies, Sony and Toshiba, prefer one format, which some speculate is being developed at this time, which could cause a delay in the release of Blu-Ray and/or HD-DVD (which is due Q4 2005). It is believed to be a unified format - mixing the best of both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. |

I'm not really in need for both, backing up on dvd-r works just fine and I have to wait some time anyway for a new format till it's as cheap as burning to dvd-r.
For watching porn I have a multimedia hdd-player, just copy the stuff from pc to the player, turn on tv and watch. With a big hdd it's better than any burning solution. And bad or boring porn could easily deleted ;) |
